The mass exodus began fifty years ago and has continued since.

They had the decency to not tear families apart in the random assignments, but my friends have left.

Relativity is a tricky beast, especially knowing they might have experienced only a few months’ worth of aging, while I’m an old woman now.

When they left, we were teenagers.

No one’s been able to figure out who gets chosen and why, you just wake up one morning, and the house next-door to you is leveled, and the land reclaimed for forestry.

I’m not bitter though. I’d like to think that the original plan was for them to be sent to a better society than the one we have. Maybe the way they left was wrong.

We’ll never know. It’s in the past, the part of our lives we like to forget.
